artfirstprimo at the NG - the morning tour 22-05-12

Welcome back art lovers. For those of you who don't yet know, let me remind you the National Gallery, London offers free lecture tours everyday at the same times of 11:30 and 14:30; leaving from the new part of the building - The Sainsbury Wing, just next to the main shop. National Gallery's Permanent Collection consists of over 2,500 paintings.

I hope that those of you, who were able to attend my free guided tour at the National Gallery today, Tuesday 22nd May, enjoyed the choice of paintings. But if you missed them or just want a reminded of which pictures we looked at so you can visit them again with a friend, here is a list of those paintings:

We began with: the fresco by Bernardino di Betto of Perugia, called Pintoricchio (active 1481; died 1513), The Penelope with the Suitors (about 1509):


Next, hanging just around the corner in room 61 was the painting trying to look like sculpture by: Andrea Mantegna (about 1430/1 - 1506) The Introduction of the Cult of Cybele at Rome (1505-06):


This was followed by the four ceiling paintings by: Paolo Caliari called Veronese due to his place of birth in Verona (1528 - 1588), Unfaithfulness (1575):


Finally we ended with two pictures by: Claude-Oscar Monet (1840 - 1926) Bathers at La Grenouillère (1869):


And: Claude-Oscar Monet (1840 - 1926), The Beach at Trouville (1870):

I will also be giving the 10 Minute Talk at 16:00 on Canaletto’s 'The Basin of San Marco on Ascension Day' on Monday 4th June in room 38.

We began with that ‘punch-up at a wedding by: Piero di Cosimo (1462 - 1522), The Fight between the Lapiths and the Centaurs (probably 1500-1515):


Next on the tour was the iconic: Sandro Botticelli (about 1445 - 1510) Venus and Mars (about 1485):


This was followed by: Diego Velázquez (1599 - 1660) The Toilet of Venus ('The Rokeby Venus') (1647-51):


Then finally we ended with: Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571 - 1610), The Supper at Emmaus (1601):

We began with: Master of the Aachen Altarpiece (active late 15th to early 16th century), The Crucifixion, and the two panels from the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool: Christ before Pilate (Front of Panel), Lamentation (Front of Panel) (about 1490-5).  Next on the tour was: Giovanni Bellini (active about 1459; died 1516) The Agony in the Garden (about 1465), and Andrea Mantegna (about 1430/1 - 1506), The Agony in the Garden (about 1458-60).  This was followed by: Titian - (Tiziano Vecellio) (active about 1506; died 1576) The Death of Actaeon (about 1559-75).  Next we looked: Jan Gossaert (active 1503; died 1532), The Adoration of the Kings (1510-15)Then finally we ended with: William Hogarth (1697 - 1764), Marriage A-la-Mode: 4, The Toilette (about 1743).

We began with: Fra Filippo Lippi (born about 1406; died 1469), The Annunciation (about 1450-3).  Next, hanging just below the Annunciation, was: Francesco Pesellino (1422 - 1457) The Story of David and Goliath (about 1445-55).  This was followed by: Jan van Eyck (active 1422; died 1441), The Arnolfini Portrait (1434)Next we looked: Garofalo (about 1481 - 1559) An Allegory of Love (probably about 1527-39).  Then finally we then looked at, Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/8 - 1543), The Ambassadors (1533).
